Which states have the easiest ID templates right now?

I see a lot of people asking where they should start if they are looking for a reliable novelty card. I've been doing some digging and it seems like some states are way more consistent than others. Ohio and Georgia are still the top picks for most people in 2026. The templates for these states have been around long enough that the big vendors have actually mastered the polycarbonate layers and the tactile feel.

States to consider:

  • Ohio: Very consistent scan rate and the ghost image placement is usually spot on.
  • Georgia: The blue tint on the header is finally being matched correctly by the top-tier printers.
  • Texas: Complex, but if you go with a verified vendor, the window feature is usually high quality.

If you're just starting out, my biggest piece of advice is to avoid states that just updated their designs in the last few months. It usually takes vendors at least half a year to get the new security features right. You don't want to be the guinea pig for a brand new template that hasn't been tested in the field yet. Stick to the tried and true designs until the newer ones have enough vouches.

Also, think about where you're using it. It's usually a bad idea to pick your exact home state. Bouncers see those every single day and can spot a tiny error in seconds. Pick a neighboring state instead. You can always memorize the out-of-state info by heart. Just make sure you know the basic info like the state capital and the zip code if they decide to grill you. Anyone else have a favorite 'easy' state they've been using lately? I'm curious if Pennsylvania is still as reliable as it used to be.

I would disagree slightly about Ohio—some of the newer scanners are picking up the barcode density issues. But for most bars, it still works like a charm. Thanks for the advice on the neighboring state trick!

Great summary! I have had a lot of success with the Georgia template lately. It seems like the vendors have finally nailed that specific blue tint on the top header. Have you noticed any issues with the new scanning software in the tri-state area?
